LOKAHI - Fredrick Harris Gallery - Tokyo American Club
Michael and Akiko Cutlip coming together with the “Lokahi” Series.
Living and working in Hawaii for over 8 years now, the abundance of nature that surrounds them is having a profound impact on their art. Botanical forms reveal themselves as abstracted or semi-abstracted shapes. The colors, the movement, and the shapes of the living world, all come uniquely together as one on the canvas.
Michael and Akiko are two uniquely, individual artists, coming together in collaboration with the "Lokahi" series. They feel that art has the power to bring people together. It has the power to unite not only the artist and his viewers (who often times are complete strangers)...but also between two people who have shared a life together for over 30 years. Their relationship was founded on art. The two artists met in art school many years ago and it continues to bring them closer and closer as time passes. Their mutual passion of the arts unites them, and their hope is it also unites their community and beyond.
Michael, a mixed media artist by nature, has been creating with the use of stencils, in one form or another, for many years…but over the past year, this process has risen to his dominant form of mark making.
Akiko, who is very much a “painterly” painter loves to explore the energy and movement of the brushstroke to canvas.
This series is a beautiful blend of Akiko’s painterly style combined with the more minimal, hard edged style of her husband Michael. Both artists come to the table with their own recognizable, individual styles. Through these collaborative works, something all together new and different has emerged.
